Today’s Toronto high temperature only reached 11C today, not the 13 or more that was threatened. But, still: yikes. In case you have forgotten what normal winter is like, the usual high for this time of year is -2C. I think 11C still beats the all-time record for today.
Not surprisingly, Stephen Harper is making the environment more of a priority for his government. The Globe’s analysis of his recent cabinet shuffle suggests that he is trying to position himself more in the political centre, in an attempt to lure voters away from the Liberals. (There’s more Globe analysis here.) Obviously, this is a good thing. I still can’t imagine myself ever voting for the Conservatives, as the party contains too many knuckle-dragging Reformers and anti-Toronto attack dogs from Mike Harris’s Ontario Tories. But I’d feel a lot more comfortable with a more centrist government.
Metafilter reports that Moroccan Argan trees are being threatened with extinction, thanks to climbing goats. Apparently, it’s a global warming thing: the meadows of Morocco have been reduced by drought, so the goats have to climb to try to get the moisture they need. Humans have also been cutting down the trees for their wood.
Here is another link to the Argan tree, along with a picture of a tree with a lot of goats in it. (The Metafilter page also has lots of links to goats in trees.)
